A Living Land of Clan and Claw

Recruit followers from a world of Beastfolk at war. Feed them. Level them up. Build a village. Lead the strongest to battle.

This is Bardwynn — a survival game with an ecosystem that lives whether you’re watching or not, and a strategy game where your followers have deep inner psychology and a diploid genetic structure they pass to their offspring through true Mendelian inheritance. With over eight trillion permutations encoded in a 64-bit genetic seed, no two souls in Bardwynn are alike.

Every follower can be exported to a portable .koan file — Sunday Morning Games’ proprietary format for a living soul. Save your strongest warrior for a future world. Trade a rare genetic line with a friend. With more possible Koans than grains of sand on a beach, the thing you built may never appear again.

Bardwynn is also a music game — not a rhythm game where you press the right button at the right time, but a real instrument. Equip a flute, a horn, or a drum, and your keyboard becomes a two-octave MIDI controller. Play any song ever written to your followers during feasts, before war, or whenever you feel like it. New instruments are constantly being added.

Built as a labor of love by a single Saturday Night Live veteran — a musician and artist armed with one idea: make a fair game. No data mining. No battle passes. No predatory loot boxes. No snooping. Just a digital container for art, music, and stories, built to grow over time. A personal relationship between maker and player that has been missing from this world.

  • Diploid Genetics — over 8 trillion permutations, no two souls alike
  • Living Ecosystem — a world that doesn’t pause when you look away
  • Five Clans — diplomacy, trade, and warband command
  • Deep Combat — melee, ranged, and mounted warfare
  • Real Music — your keyboard becomes a playable MIDI instrument
  • Base Building & Deep Crafting

From the Book of Bardwynn

Before the five clans drew their borders in blood and treaty, Bardwynn belonged to no beast — and to everybeast that walked, swam, or flew beneath the Paw of Gaea.

The Bardwynnian Beasts grew from this land — shaped by its rivers and mountain passes, its long winters and brief summers of plenty. Each clan carries the land in their genetics, written in the old tongue of Ban-Tun across generations too numerous to count.

The Earth clan builds in stone. The Air clan moves like weather. The Fire clan burns what it cannot bend. The Water clan remembers everything. And the Qi clan — the Ban-Tun speakers, the oldest — tend to a language that some say is less a tongue than a door.

You arrive in Year 113. The last great war is recent enough that elders still carry its scars. The next one is close enough that the young are already choosing sides.

Field Notes — Winter/Spring 2026

The last few months have been pretty intense. It's the stage where you're building something and it needs all kinds of tape and sticks to keep it in place. You know it's going to be good but it looks like a dried-out worm on a sidewalk.

I have a philosophy: make the foundations solid. No one cares about basements. They're covered in dirt and forgotten about. But without them the house falls. So it is with everything.

Here's what was happening.

Animal AI. All the fauna in the world are governed by BP_Animal, a behavior system characterized by pack and herd behavior. The goal is a living ecosystem that doesn't care whether the player is there or not.

Combat integrated with Unreal's GAS system.

Riding. You can ride any animal in the game if you can tame it. Some bigger Bardwynn souls may have trouble riding a housecat, but that won't be a problem for mice or other small souls. It depends on what species you pick for your playthrough.

Warband. An RTS camera and unit movement system — just when you thought you were in a survival sim.

MIDI instrumentation. Craft an instrument and equip it — your WASD keys become a musical instrument. Play for your followers and it affects them.
